Participants learned evidenced-based harm reduction strategies to keep people who use opioids and psychostimulants alive with reduced disease burden. Presenters discussed methods of engaging people who actively use opioids and/or psychostimulants, harm reduction interventions, overdose prevention and response, overamping prevention and response, and linkages to care.

Leaders face questions about who should be sitting around the table and which two or three responses might work to address a community consortium challenge. This session shared recent trend data on opioid and methamphetamine use, overdose rates, and the prevalence of neonatal abstinence syndrome in rural places across the U.S. In addition, data was presented on who is treating opioid use disorder in rural places and on the health workforce providing mental health services for rural patients.

This presentation highlighted The Health Wagon’s Rural Communities Opioid Response program, Strengthening and Expanding Substance Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Programs in Southwest Virginia. The program is a consortium-based implementation that aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality of substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD), in rural communities in Southwest Virginia at the highest risk for SUD.

Creating and maintaining an open, safe, and inclusive setting that reflects warmth and promotes connection and belonging are essential elements of peer-led, peer-driven, social model recovery homes. Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities. This presentation detailed the critical role of the Peer-Led, Peer-Driven Social Model of Recovery.

During this session, Dr. Lopata discussed federal/HRSA investments focused on improving the health outcomes for and reducing health disparities among maternal and child health populations. More specifically, Dr. Lopata discussed the multiple programs/interventions funded by HRSA that together work (along with federal, state, regional, and local partners) to improve the prevention, screening, and treatment of opioid use disorder during pregnancy and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in the United States.
