Recovery Housing, Medications for OUD (MOUD), and Emerging Issues
Presenters will explain recovery housing and MOUD in the context of issues emerging in rural America resulting from the pandemic and its impact on the rates of substance use disorder (SUD) and drug overdose. They will discuss the impact of the pandemic on the correctional system and state actions in response to COVID-19 as it affects those with SUD. They will also give an overview of how recovery housing can be developed, especially in rural areas.

This presentation covered recovery housing and MOUD in the context of issues emerging in rural America resulting from the pandemic and its impact on the rates of SUD and drug overdose. Presenters explained the role of RH in the continuum of care in this exciting and interactive presentation on emerging topics related to integrating social and medical models of recovery. They focused on emerging issues in rural America resulting from the pandemic, its impact on the rates of substance use disorder (SUD), and use of RH. Presenters emphasized funding for the development of RH, the role of partnerships within the recovery ecosystem, and promising practices involving cross-sector collaboration in housing, corrections, treatment, and recovery supports.

Illuminate Colorado, an RCORP Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) grantee, and partners presented on their Tough as a Mother campaign. Tough as a Mother is a statewide campaign launched in May 2020 and has been working to decrease the stigma around maternal substance use disorder. The Illuminate Colorado Team provided an overview of their campaign and how others can access the shared resources, followed by time for Q&A.

There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

The experience of Jenna Tatro’s substance use disorder and her subsequent overdose death has mobilized Jenna’s family and the Jenna’s Promise team to try and address the gaps in our current national recovery model, culminating in the formation of what aims to be a paradigm-shifting pathway to sustained recovery.
