The Recovery-Ready Workplace Toolkit: Guidance and Resources for Private and Public Sector Employers was created through the efforts of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Domestic Policy Council, and 12 federal departments and independent agencies. It is designed to help businesses and other employers prevent and respond more effectively to substance misuse among employees, build their workforces through hiring of people in recovery, and develop a recovery-supportive culture.

The North Carolina Emergency Department (ED) Peer Support Program enables participating North Carolina hospitals to embed certified peer support specialists in their emergency departments to connect patients presenting with opioid overdose to treatment, recovery, resources and harm reduction supports. Over its 36 year history, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy has provided billions of dollars in funding to increase health care access, strengthen health networks, and focus on care quality improvements for Critical Access Hospitals and small rural hospitals. In fiscal year 2022, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) – through the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) – provided approximately $408 million in funding to increase health care access, strengthen health networks, and focus on care quality improvements for Critical Access Hospitals and small rural hospitals.

The experience of Jenna Tatro’s substance use disorder and her subsequent overdose death has mobilized Jenna’s family and the Jenna’s Promise team to try and address the gaps in our current national recovery model, culminating in the formation of what aims to be a paradigm-shifting pathway to sustained recovery.

This session highlighted over a decade of Community Apgar research and its implementation supporting community development for physician recruitment and retention in rural FQHCs and CAHs. This presentation also included ongoing implementation of the program through collaboration with 3RNet and the use of a “Factors Book” which can highlight community assets and focus recruitment efforts to better meet community needs.

Data supporting the positive outcomes associated with peer support integration throughout the substance use disorder continuum of intervention and care has led nationally to systems integrating members of this relatively new workforce into their teams. Among most peer certifying authorities, sustained recovery from substance use disorder is one of the requirements to become a peer. Although substance use recurrence or “relapse” is not common among those in sustained recovery, it does happen. This webinar will introduce suggested considerations when attempting to draft model recurrence policy for peer support employers.
