The Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Office (ATTC NCO) convened the Contingency Management Task Force (CM Task Force) in April 2023 at the request of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The SAMHSA Guidance for Implementation of Contingency Management Training and Technical Assistance was developed by the CM Task Force.

The Recovery-Ready Workplace Toolkit: Guidance and Resources for Private and Public Sector Employers was created through the efforts of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Domestic Policy Council, and 12 federal departments and independent agencies. It is designed to help businesses and other employers prevent and respond more effectively to substance misuse among employees, build their workforces through hiring of people in recovery, and develop a recovery-supportive culture.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook has been updated to provide information on community health workers, as well as over 300 profiles covering over 500 community and social service occupations. The new CHW profile reflects the core CHW duties, competencies and training and employment sites. While the profile focuses on CHWs, it also mentions other professions such as peer support specialists, community health representatives, and promotores de salud for the first time.

Researchers analyzed survey responses to the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interest and Needs Survey to compare rural and urban skill proficiencies, training needs, turnover risk, and experiences of bullying due to work as a public health professional. Among the findings, rural staff had higher likelihood than urban staff of reporting proficiencies in community engagement, data-based decision-making, and in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rural staff were also more likely than urban staff to report leaving because of stress, experiences of bullying, and avoiding situations that made them think about COVID-19.

The FY22 RCORP-Implementation cohort is diverse and dynamic in every way, representing a wide variety of experience and possessing an unending amount of knowledge on SUD in rural areas. This session explored the different methods and practices this cohort uses in its efforts to address SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery. Participants had an opportunity to learn from and to build relationships with one another, which will, in turn strengthen, their RCORP projects. Additionally, they heard from RCORP program staff and the RCORP-Evaluation team about program updates and data utilization tools.

During this session, the Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) RCORP-Implementation grantees had an opportunity to share best practices, identify the impact that the RCORP grant had in their communities, learned how to use the data collected in the data dashboard, and network with other grantees. In addition, grantees received important information pertaining to evaluation, upcoming deliverables, sustainability and next steps.

Health care workforce shortages continue to persist across rural communities, while current emerging trends have made it increasingly challenging to recruit physicians and other health care professionals. HRSA shared how one rural workforce initiative, the Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program, is increasing the rural physician pipeline. Featured RRPD grantees discussed how their programs are shaping the behavioral health workforce of the future.
