The Housing Assistance Council's new Rural Resource Guide: Affordable Housing and Recovery in Rural Communities is an effort towards assisting local rural organizations with proper resources. While many across the U.S. are facing substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid misuse, housing is essential to addressing the epidemic. The guide is meant as a resource to housing practitioners looking to help provide homes to individuals affected by SUD.

This session highlighted the ways in which data from RCORP consortia are used, how service capacity and access have changed, and whether there is evidence that the health status of rural residents is improving. There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

Creating and maintaining an open, safe, and inclusive setting that reflects warmth and promotes connection and belonging are essential elements of peer-led, peer-driven, social model recovery homes. Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities. This presentation detailed the critical role of the Peer-Led, Peer-Driven Social Model of Recovery.

The guide from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing aims to support harm reduction organizations operating in virtual environments and summarizes some of the strategies that harm reduction organizations have developed and found to be effective at maintaining connection while doing harm reduction work virtually. Harm reduction continued during the COVID-19 pandemic and organizations effectively changed the way services were delivered, primarily through telework.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced proposed rules for the prescribing of controlled medications via telemedicine beyond the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency. One rule addresses the expansion of induction of buprenorphine via telemedicine encounter while the other covers telemedicine prescribing of controlled substances when the practitioner and the patient have not had a prior in-person medical evaluation. While opioid use disorders occur at similar rates in both rural and urban areas, medication assisted treatment (MAT) prescribers have been disproportionately located in urban areas. The public will be able to comment on the proposed rules until March 31st.

This presentation will detail the efforts behind the grant to develop a Recovery Friendly Workplace credential through training, technical assistance, and support that assists businesses in fostering a workplace culture that promotes employee safety, health, and well-being.
