There are multiple systems that can help individuals to address substance use disorder (SUD). A new report from the Addiction and Public Policy Initiative of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law Center discusses how these multiple systems are often disjointed which creates barriers for those needing to access services for SUD.

Illuminate Colorado, an RCORP Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) grantee, and partners presented on their Tough as a Mother campaign. Tough as a Mother is a statewide campaign launched in May 2020 and has been working to decrease the stigma around maternal substance use disorder. The Illuminate Colorado Team provided an overview of their campaign and how others can access the shared resources, followed by time for Q&A.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has provided resources for families who may be helping a loved one experiencing a mental or substance use disorder. SAMHSA provides documents and videos on how to start the conversation and support guides as families can play a central role in helping loved ones.

There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

Researchers evaluate The Kentucky Access to Recovery Program (KATR), which provides services to individuals recovering from opioid use in several counties in Eastern Kentucky, and conclude KATR demonstrates a potentially effective strategy for increasing health-related social services in rural areas.
