This updated TIP reviews what is known about treating the medical, psychiatric, and SUD-related problems associated with the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as the misuse of prescription stimulants. The TIP offers recommendations on treatment approaches and maximizing treatment engagement and retention, and strategies for initiating and maintaining abstinence.

A shifting legal and public health landscape means, for example, increased scrutiny of the courts’ focus on abstinence and mandated treatment, and the use of jail. Contingency management has empirical support but limited implementation. This report provides an overview of contingency management, barriers of implementation, and recommendation on how to overcome the challenges of implementation. Evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder is important as the U.S. has been experiencing an overdose crisis resulting in overdose deaths.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance and the National Institute of Corrections published the Guidelines for Managing Substance Withdrawal in Jails: A Tool for Local Government Officials, Jail Administrators, Correctional Officers, and Health Care Professionals to help increase access to evidence-based treatment for individuals with SUD and those who are at risk for overdose. There is a high prevalence of SUD among individuals who are incarcerated. Withdrawal while incarcerated is less discussed, but still poses a risk for individuals. The guidelines were created to help jail administrators protect the health and rights of people incarcerated.
