Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, combined with counseling, to treat substance use disorders. Research has proven the effectiveness of MAT and addiction treatment experts endorse it, but a variety of barriers have prevented the widespread use of MAT. These include a lack of financing for medication, insufficient organizational infrastructure to deliver medication, state and county funding and regulatory obstacles, physician training and certification, staff and client resistance, and community attitudes.

Fueled by misinformation, fentanyl panic has harmed public health through complicating overdose rescue while rationalizing hyper-punitive criminal laws, wasteful expenditures, and proposals to curtail vital access to pain pharmacotherapy. To assess misinformation about health risk from casual contact with fentanyl, we characterize its diffusion and excess visibility in mainstream and social media.

The University of Rochester, a RCORP-Rural Center of Excellence on SUD Prevention, has 988 Lifeline posters available for download on their website. The national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was launched in July 2023 and provides a way for individuals experiencing a suicidal, mental health, or substance use disorder crisis to receive urgent help 24/7. Spreading awareness of the 988 Lifeline is important as it can help residents in rural areas obtain treatment and help quickly.
