Contingency management has empirical support but limited implementation. This report provides an overview of contingency management, barriers of implementation, and recommendation on how to overcome the challenges of implementation. Evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder is important as the U.S. has been experiencing an overdose crisis resulting in overdose deaths.

As substance use and its progression to impairment, loss of control, and development of substance use disorders is a significant problem for adolescents and young adults, this presentation will provide a more in-depth review of developmentally informed approaches to engaging youth and their families in treatment. Advancing health equity involves ensuring that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This also applies to behavioral health. In conjunction with quality services, this involves addressing social determinants, such as employment and housing stability, insurance status, proximity to services, culturally responsive care – all of which have an impact on behavioral health outcomes.

Buprenorphine utilization is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Given the recent
increase in child maltreatment reports related to parental substance use, research should explore the correlation between buprenorphine treatment and child maltreatment–related outcomes.

This updated TIP reviews what is known about treating the medical, psychiatric, and SUD-related problems associated with the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as the misuse of prescription stimulants. The TIP offers recommendations on treatment approaches and maximizing treatment engagement and retention, and strategies for initiating and maintaining abstinence.

This Rural Health Care Chartbook is part of a family of documents and tools that support the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (NHQDR). The NHQDR includes annual reports to Congress mandated in the Healthcare Research and Quality Act of 1999 (P.L. 106- 129). These reports provide a comprehensive overview of the quality of healthcare received by the general U.S. population and disparities in care experienced by different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The reports assess the performance of our health system and identify areas of strength and weakness in the healthcare system along four main axes: access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, disparities in healthcare, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) priority areas. The reports are based on more than 250 measures of quality and disparities covering a broad array of healthcare services and settings. Data are generally available through 2017-2018. The reports are produced with the help of an Interagency Work Group led by AHRQ and submitted on behalf of the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Stimulant intoxication, withdrawal, and psychosis have accepted and established treatment strategies. Several lifesaving harm reduction interventions/services are available. There are no Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for treatment of stimulant use disorder, although several are promising. Behavioral treatment, especially the use of contingency management (and other approaches with supportive evidence), has by far the best evidence of effectiveness. The presenter reviewed topics of importance to clinicians treating individuals with stimulant use disorder.
