This study links parental incarceration to adolescent substance use in rural communities. The data is state-specific and pulls from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey in which adolescents self-reported experiences. Results concluded that parental incarceration was associated with higher substance use and expanded prevention and intervention strategies for adolescents could help reduce the rates.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health have joined with two philanthropic organizations with experience in minority communities – Well-being and Equity (WE) in the World and Well Being In the Nation (WIN) Network – to collaborate on guidelines for what it will take to bring health equity to rural areas.

Two reports are now available from Fors Marsh, a research and communications firm who's reports work to highlight system problems like SUD. The "Road Map for Advancing a Recovery-Ready Nation" report examines recovery research and covers issues such as support services, housing, employment, workforce, stigma, etc. The "2022 Workplace Recovery Survey Report" covers background and understanding recovery in the workplace, policies, culture, experiences, and much more.

The North Carolina Emergency Department (ED) Peer Support Program enables participating North Carolina hospitals to embed certified peer support specialists in their emergency departments to connect patients presenting with opioid overdose to treatment, recovery, resources and harm reduction supports. There are multiple systems that can help individuals to address substance use disorder (SUD). A new report from the Addiction and Public Policy Initiative of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law Center discusses how these multiple systems are often disjointed which creates barriers for those needing to access services for SUD.

Researchers interviewed primary care physicians in rural, western Pennsylvania to get their views on barriers to rural health care. There were three key themes that came out of the report including cost and insurance, geographic dispersion, and provider shortages/burnout. The providers also made suggestions on possible solutions and gave information on ways they have helped address the situation
