Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, combined with counseling, to treat substance use disorders. Research has proven the effectiveness of MAT and addiction treatment experts endorse it, but a variety of barriers have prevented the widespread use of MAT. These include a lack of financing for medication, insufficient organizational infrastructure to deliver medication, state and county funding and regulatory obstacles, physician training and certification, staff and client resistance, and community attitudes.

Fueled by misinformation, fentanyl panic has harmed public health through complicating overdose rescue while rationalizing hyper-punitive criminal laws, wasteful expenditures, and proposals to curtail vital access to pain pharmacotherapy. To assess misinformation about health risk from casual contact with fentanyl, we characterize its diffusion and excess visibility in mainstream and social media.

Presenters explained the role of RH in the continuum of care in this exciting and interactive presentation on emerging topics related to integrating social and medical models of recovery. They focused on emerging issues in rural America resulting from the pandemic, its impact on the rates of substance use disorder (SUD), and use of RH. Presenters emphasized funding for the development of RH, the role of partnerships within the recovery ecosystem, and promising practices involving cross-sector collaboration in housing, corrections, treatment, and recovery supports.
