Returning to your community with a criminal record can be a difficult task due to the collateral consequence of incarceration that limits access to employment, housing, healthcare, and education.
Your First 48 Toolkit promotes social and economic independence through relationship building, strong community involvement, education and public support. The Toolkit will help you foresee barriers to a successful reentry and identify likely solutions by informing you of who to connect with and what questions to ask.

HepVu released new interactive maps visualizing U.S. county-level Hepatitis C-related mortality, illustrating how factors such as age and geographic region affect health outcomes. Published in Hepatology, the data demonstrate that Hepatitis C-related mortality has been decreasing across the U.S. since 2013

This article describes the lack of evidence surrounding the use of Medically Supervised Withdrawal as a standalone “treatment.”

The most effective treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) are the three prescription medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone—that are proved to increase a patient’s treatment retention and reduce illicit use and the risk of overdose. The only facilities legally able to offer all three medications are opioid treatment programs (OTPs), a critical component of the U.S. substance use treatment system that are regulated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), as well as state agencies, and are certified to administer any FDA-approved medication for the treatment of OUD.

In this cross-sectional study of data from 3142 US counties, counties in the South Atlantic, Mountain, and East North Central divisions had more than twice the odds of being at high risk for opioid overdose mortality and lacking in capacity to deliver medications for opioid use disorder. Higher density of primary care clinicians, a younger population, micropolitan status, and lower rates of unemployment were associated with lower risk of opioid overdose and lower risk of lacking in capacity to deliver medications for opioid use disorder.
