A new article in RHIhub's The Rural Monitor describes the community's understanding of Native culture in Gallup, New Mexico to take an effective, holistic community-wide approach to recovery of SUD. The article highlights a community-wide consortium that works hard to tackle the issue of alcohol and substance use disorders through withdrawal management, peer counseling, assisting with housing, and other services.

The report provides key findings from the study assessing substance use and recovery stigma by healthcare workers, compared to non-healthcare workers. The stigma that is perceived by people who use drugs or are in recovery (PWUD/IR) was found to be a structural concern as a large population are opting out of going to the doctor, leaving them open to a variety of untreated illnesses.

To more effectively address known barriers to treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), policy researchers looked at feedback from 27 community-based programs serving predominantly people of color across the U.S. Beyond poverty and racism, providers describe challenges retaining staff with appropriate language and cultural skills as well as a complex patchwork of social skills.

Presenters will discuss how racial inequity, assimilation, risk factors, and historical and immigration trauma have created a landscape where there is a critical need for person centered, culturally respectful and relevant mental health and SUD/OUD supports and service delivery for Latino people. A new brief from the National Center for Health Statistics gives geographic detail on the latest increase in overdose death rates. Overall, urban counties had higher rates, but eight states – California, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Vermont, and Virginia – had rates that were higher in rural counties.

This presentation will focus on the relationship between trauma and substance use as it relates to treatment for women, as well as a discussion of impactful trauma-informed and gender-responsive interventions. The evidence-based interventions will be based on Seeking Safety and Finding Your Best Self models, both of which are present-focused and easily implemented in any treatment setting.
