The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has provided resources for families who may be helping a loved one experiencing a mental or substance use disorder. SAMHSA provides documents and videos on how to start the conversation and support guides as families can play a central role in helping loved ones.

There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

Researchers evaluate The Kentucky Access to Recovery Program (KATR), which provides services to individuals recovering from opioid use in several counties in Eastern Kentucky, and conclude KATR demonstrates a potentially effective strategy for increasing health-related social services in rural areas.

Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities. This presentation detailed the critical role of the Peer-Led, Peer-Driven Social Model of Recovery.

Researchers looked at what happens in rural and urban emergency departments (EDs) when peer-based services are used for patients arriving with opioid use disorder (OUD). The study aimed to find gaps in knowledge for rural EDs and found five key differences from urban counterparts that presented a challenge. Among these was difficulty identifying community partners.

Data supporting the positive outcomes associated with peer support integration throughout the substance use disorder continuum of intervention and care has led nationally to systems integrating members of this relatively new workforce into their teams. Among most peer certifying authorities, sustained recovery from substance use disorder is one of the requirements to become a peer. Although substance use recurrence or “relapse” is not common among those in sustained recovery, it does happen. This webinar will introduce suggested considerations when attempting to draft model recurrence policy for peer support employers.
