Researchers looked at records for 917 patients who engaged with a peer recovery coach via telehealth after discharge from emergency departments for opioid use. The investigation focused on one Indiana-based hospital system that included six hospitals located in cities and seven that had rural Critical Access Hospital designations.

Researchers looked at what happens in rural and urban emergency departments (EDs) when peer-based services are used for patients arriving with opioid use disorder (OUD). The study aimed to find gaps in knowledge for rural EDs and found five key differences from urban counterparts that presented a challenge. Among these was difficulty identifying community partners.

Syringe services programs (SSP) are harm reduction programs that provide a wide range of services including, but not typically limited to, the provision of new, unused hypodermic needles and syringes and other injection drug use supplies, such as cookers, tourniquets, alcohol wipes, and sharps waste disposal containers, to people who inject drugs. Creating and maintaining an open, safe, and inclusive setting that reflects warmth and promotes connection and belonging are essential elements of peer-led, peer-driven, social model recovery homes. Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities. This presentation detailed the critical role of the Peer-Led, Peer-Driven Social Model of Recovery.

Data supporting the positive outcomes associated with peer support integration throughout the substance use disorder continuum of intervention and care has led nationally to systems integrating members of this relatively new workforce into their teams. Among most peer certifying authorities, sustained recovery from substance use disorder is one of the requirements to become a peer. Although substance use recurrence or “relapse” is not common among those in sustained recovery, it does happen. This webinar will introduce suggested considerations when attempting to draft model recurrence policy for peer support employers.
