The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) hosted the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Vaccination Efforts in People Who Inject Drugs webinar last week, September 10, 2020. The session featured Centers for Disease Control and Prevention subject matter experts who discussed the epidemiology of hepatitis A and hepatitis B in people who use and inject drugs and the rationale for the vaccination recommendations. The session also featured several jurisdictions and partner organizations who shared their lessons learned and best practices for reaching and implementing vaccination services in this community.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, combined with counseling, to treat substance use disorders. Research has proven the effectiveness of MAT and addiction treatment experts endorse it, but a variety of barriers have prevented the widespread use of MAT. These include a lack of financing for medication, insufficient organizational infrastructure to deliver medication, state and county funding and regulatory obstacles, physician training and certification, staff and client resistance, and community attitudes.

Fueled by misinformation, fentanyl panic has harmed public health through complicating overdose rescue while rationalizing hyper-punitive criminal laws, wasteful expenditures, and proposals to curtail vital access to pain pharmacotherapy. To assess misinformation about health risk from casual contact with fentanyl, we characterize its diffusion and excess visibility in mainstream and social media.
