The intersection of opioid abuse, particularly injection drug use (IDU), and HIV is well documented; in fact, IDU is the second most frequent route of HIV transmission. Injection drug use, either directly or via sexual contact with an IDU partner, accounts for one-third of the estimated AIDS cases since the beginning of the epidemic, and 18 percent of new infections in the United States.

The document provides guidance on how to plan for an outbreak of HIV or HCV among PWID including considerations for developing an outbreak response plan to minimize the impact of the outbreak on the community and stop further transmission. The document also outlines strategies to detect and investigate a possible outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) want greater awareness of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their connection to high rates of overdose and suicide. This week they announced a new training webpage, UrgentRelatedPreventable.org, designed in collaboration with the American Public Health Association to provide background and talking points. The site explains how exposure to certain events and conditions in childhood have lasting effects on health, well-being, and prosperity far into adulthood. See Funding section below for a CDC effort to research the links between ACEs and substance use.

These measures are pending OMB clearance and are subject to revision. This page contains the RCORP data collection resources for the Psychostimulant Support grantees only.

Among those featured in the article is the RCORP-TA grantee, the South Dakota State University's program Stigma, Treatment, Avoidance and Recovery in Time - South Dakota (START-SD).

As HIV transmission via injection drugs are increasing, knowing the variation in which the the transmission occurs can be beneficial in treatment and intervention. Authors of the study look into the frequency and distribution of HIV transmission behaviors among people who use drugs in rural areas to possibly determine if interventions could be universally effective. Data collected in the study suggests that there are many variations in the transmission behaviors.

As suicide has become a major health concern in the United States, September 2023 is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month. The National Institute of Mental Health has put together a digital toolkit for Suicide Prevention Month to raise awareness. Resources are provided for multiple online platforms for the public to share which focus on recognizing the warning signs for suicide and how to get people the help they need.

Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the heart’s chambers and valves that can be difficult and expensive to treat. Like hepatitis and HIV, infective endocarditis can be caused by using needles that are not sterile. The JBS evaluation team will review and provide guidance on the PIMS measures that are most problematic for grantees and the new PIMS measures that are pending OMB approval. They will also highlight ways that consortiums can use their data dashboards to highlight successes and areas for improvement as they work to obtain funding and motivate and engage stakeholders.
