The toolkit Stimulant Safety: Getting Amped Up to Reduce Harms When Using Stimulants was developed through the CDC-funded National Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center in collaboration with the NASTAD Drug User Health team and consultants. This resource provides education on the reasons people take stimulants, how to minimize harm, reduce stigma around stimulants, support peoples' positive experiences, the intersection of stimulant use and sexual safety, and much more.

More people are dying from overdose now than at any point in history. Individuals learned about three innovative communication campaigns that challenge stigma, center people who use drugs, and build support for harm reduction as a lifesaving strategy to reduce overdose deaths.

Stigma is a social process linked to power and control which leads to creating stereotypes and assigning labels to those that are considered deviate from the norm or behave “badly” -- stigma creates the social conditions that makes people who use drugs believe they are not deserving of being treated with dignity & respect, perpetuating feelings of fear and isolation. There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

The presentation outlined how the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion/Let Everyone Advance with Dignity (LEADD) pre-arrest diversion initiative operates. It covered how public health partners can engage with law enforcement to bring about a true collaborative approach to public safety. It further discussed how the LEAD model is rooted in harm reduction.

In this session, we described how we used RCORP-Planning and RCORP-Implementation funds to plan, establish, and grow integrated harm reduction and recovery services in one space, the Fayette County Connection Café. Certified peer recovery coaches facilitated and staff Connection Café services, including peer support mutual aid groups, syringe services programming, street outreach, harm reduction vending machine, and 24-hour access to Naloxone.

Sonoran Prevention Works (SPW) shared some of its experiences implementing harm reduction in Cochise County, one of the more rural counties in AZ. SPW provides street-based outreach, testing, and peer support; offers training, education, and technical assistance and TA; and engages in local and state advocacy work.

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized and conducted a two-day virtual public workshop that brought together data experts, program implementers and evaluators, and other key interested parties to explore data collection efforts, evidence gaps, and research needs on harm reduction for people who use drugs (PWUD).
