The National Governors Association and the American Correctional Association recently released a new toolkit on "Expanding Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Corrections and Community Settings: A Roadmap for States to Reduce Opioid Use Disorder for People in the Justice System."
This roadmap highlights existing state efforts and serves as a policy development tool for Governors and state officials seeking to improve coordination and bolster existing efforts across state agencies to address OUD among people involved in the justice system by expanding access to evidence-based medications. The following are key steps for supporting MOUD in corrections settings.

This toolkit is designed primarily for substance use and child welfare practitioners, as well as other service providers and health system planners who offer services to, or design services with, pregnant women and new mothers who use substances. Much is changing in the substance use and child welfare fields to bring forth approaches that are culturally safe, trauma informed, harm reduction-oriented and participant-driven. This toolkit highlights these advances and invites people working in both systems to think about how we can continue to improve our work, in partnership with the women who use these services.

This session presented resources and elements to consider when planning to collaborate with a local jail to establish pre- and post-release programing and coordination of care and services for individuals with SUD. The National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care (known as the National CLAS Standards) are intended to advance health equity, improve quality and help eliminate health care disparities by establishing a blueprint for organizations to deliver effective, understandable and respectful services at every point of patient contact. Adoption of the National CLAS Standards will help advance better health and health care in the United States.
