Substance Use Prevention Month

Posted 9/25/2025 (updated 10/3/2025)
Substance Use Prevention Month

October has been recognized as Substance Use Prevention Month since 2011. RCORP-TA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) both strive to raise national awareness and start the conversation on substance use prevention. SAMHSA offers customizable social media toolkits, evidence-based resources, and events to help organizations increase awareness in their own communities.

Join RCORP-TA and SAMHSA in recognizing the importance of prevention:

  • To inspire action, each of us can share how prevention improves lives in our communities.
  • We aim to prevent substance use in the first place, prevent the progression of use, and reduce risk. And we have the prevention playbook to do so.
  • Prevention science (with decades of research and community-based experience) shows that prevention works.
  • Prevention strengthens protective factors and reduces risk factors ― in individuals, families, schools, communities, and society.
  • Prevention helps us get ahead of substance use and mental health challenges — so that youth, families, and communities can thrive.
