RSV 2025: Breakout Session 7D - Telehealth for Rural America: Past, Present and Future Innovations

Posted 5/14/2025 (updated 6/10/2025)

Description:

Telehealth has long been a critical tool for expanding health care access in rural communities. While it began as a solution for geographically isolated populations, telehealth transformed into a mainstream care modality. However, this rapid expansion also highlighted persistent challenges—especially in rural communities—including broadband limitations, digital literacy gaps, and device access disparities. This session explored the historical evolution of telehealth, its current landscape and barriers, and creative, out-of-the-box solutions that communities are implementing to bridge the digital divide. We also looked ahead to the future, examining how emerging technologies could reshape telehealth for rural populations.

Presenter:

Kathy H. Wibberly, PhD, Director, Mid-Atlantic Telehealth Resource Center
