This study sought to identify best practices for retaining individuals in treatment and for achieving continuity of care between settings.

This three-part study included a literature review of peer-reviewed and gray literature that addressed retention in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, key informant interviews with six subject matter experts, and five case studies of sites or models that show promise for improving retention in treatment. The objectives of the case studies were: (1) to obtain an indepth understanding of different models of specialty SUD treatment that are thought to be successful in retaining individuals in treatment; and (2) to determine the programmatic and financial structures required to support retention in treatment and sustained recovery.
