Behavioral Health Conditions and Workforce Shortage

Posted 6/2/2023 (updated 3/27/2024)

Behavioral health care encompasses a wide variety of interventions delivered by many different types of providers. Although there is a call for expanding direct or indirect behavioral health service systems to care for those affected, in the U.S., nearly all these providers are in short supply.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) released a report, which features several rural counties, on behavioral health needs and access challenges.

The nonprofit Commonwealth Fund includes considerations for rural areas in a recent report that breaks down factors affecting the workforce, including licensed providers, clinical supporters, community care workers, and frontline workers.
