Project Summary
START-SD-PSS (Stigma, Treatment, Avoidance, and Recovery in Time-Psychostimulant Support) aims to increase access to and effectiveness of prevention, treatment, and recovery services in rural areas to patients and families affected by psychostimulant use disorders. START-SD-PSS expands our current innovative START-SD program (Stigma, Treatment, Avoidance, and Recovery in Time), which is focused on opioid use disorder (OUD), by addressing key barriers to the prevention, treatment, and recovery services in our target counties. The project leverages the tremendous skills and resources from five of our consortium organizations. In addition, this project leverages the knowledge, skills, and resources of additional organizations involved in our consortium or advisory board, which have expertise in SUD prevention, treatment and recovery across the state. This program provides evidence-based incentives for increasing sobriety and attendance of appointments, reducing anhedonia through availability of fitness courses, and development and utilization of a culturally tailored peer recovery program. Together these efforts, in addition to the treatment services currently offered, will help retain patients in treatment longer, which is shown to improve the chances of long-term recovery. The program also addresses stigma, a major barrier to seeking treatment, through media campaigns and community education in target counties. Prevention of substance use is also important when addressing any type of SUD. This project supplements current work by focusing on high-risk children of parents with SUD through the use of the evidence-based Strengthening Families Program. This multiprong approach will improve overall access and utilization of services and improve long-term outcomes in our target counties. The overarching goal of the START-SD-PSS program is to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with psychostimulant use disorder among adults aged 25-54.
