Project Summary
rEASON project intends to deliver preventive OUD/MOUD strategies to improve patient and parent/legal guardian knowledge of opioids as a surgical-gateway and advocacy of opioid sparing options to rural adult and pediatric surgical settings by teaching primary and pediatric providers, their patients, and parents/legal guardians how to speak to surgeons and anesthesiologists about opioid sparing solutions to pain management during the peri-operative experience. The project and consortium will implement the curriculum developed in the planning phase, expand upon lessons learned, and evaluate these opioid-sparing analgesia standards of care and related strategies for: 1) increased advocacy by patients and parents/legal guardians; 2) increased education of providers and patients of opioid sparing techniques and risks of surgery as a gateway to OUD; 3) impact of training curriculum; 4) effectiveness of rural peer to peer training model for patients, parents/legal guardians, primary care providers (PCP) and their care teams, behavioral health providers, pharmacists, and anesthesiologists, to activate and mobilize a group of providers and peer leaders to strengthen the capacity of multi-organizational groups to prevent opioid use disorder (OUD) better and expand support for opioid-sparing analgesia guidelines in our rural communities.
