FDA Alerts Health Care Professionals of Risks to Patients Exposed to Xylazine in Illicit Drugs

In November 2022, the FDA issued a letter providing information on the severe ulcerations that can occur from repeated xylazine exposure, withdrawal symptoms, and the interference xylazine can cause on successful treatment. The FDA continues to investigate the source of xylazine in the illicit drug supply. Health care professionals are strongly encouraged to report events in humans associated with xylazine exposure.

Public Safety-led Community-oriented Overdose Prevention Efforts (PS-COPE) Toolkit

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing announced a toolkit, Public Safety-led Community-oriented Overdose Prevention Efforts (PS-COPE), which provides framework to use to enhance overdose prevention and response in the Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) communities. The toolkit provides tips, tools, and resources to help integrate this approach into existing overdose prevention and response efforts.

The CDC report released in September 2022 highlights that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths were preventable. Among key findings, the report finds that one of the leading underlying causes of pregnancy-related death includes mental health conditions related to substance use disorder.

Provisional Drug Overdose Death Counts

The data visualization in the National Vital Statistics System, received and processed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), shows the 12 month provisional number and percent change of drug overdose deaths. The analysis dashboard also shows the provisional number of drug overdose deaths by drug or drug class.

Biden-⁠Harris Administration Launches First-of-its-Kind National Data Dashboard for Non-Fatal Overdoses

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has launched the national data dashboard of non-fatal opioid overdoses. The goal of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Non-Fatal Opioid Overdose Tracker is to track non-fatal opioid overdose in the pre-hospital setting using nationally submitted Emergency Medical Services (EMS) data to help first responders, service providers, and policymakers save more lives.

Comparing Projected Fatal Overdose Outcomes and Costs of Strategies to Expand Community-Based Distribution of Naloxone in Rhode Island

In this decision analytical model study evaluating the distribution of 10 000 additional naloxone kits annually in Rhode Island, the strategy focusing on distribution of naloxone according to geographic need to people who inject drugs resulted in the best outcomes at the lowest cost, averting an estimated 25.3% of opioid overdose deaths at an incremental cost of $27 312 per opioid overdose death averted

The Suicide, Overdose, and Adverse Childhood Experiences Prevention Capacity Assessment Tool (SPACECAT): Addressing the Intersection of Suicide, Overdose, and ACEs

Last year, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) launched a resource meant to help local health departments (LHD) prevent or mitigate potentially traumatic events, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The Suicide, Overdose, and Adverse Childhood Experiences Prevention Capacity Assessment Tool (SPACECAT) allows LHDs to make an internal assessment of their capacity to address and prevent a still-growing public health issue.
