Providers' Perspective on Barriers to Rural Health Care

Researchers interviewed primary care physicians in rural, western Pennsylvania to get their views on barriers to rural health care. There were three key themes that came out of the report including cost and insurance, geographic dispersion, and provider shortages/burnout. The providers also made suggestions on possible solutions and gave information on ways they have helped address the situation

Highlighting Fiscal Year 2022 Federal Office of Rural Health Policy Investments

Over its 36 year history, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy has provided billions of dollars in funding to increase health care access, strengthen health networks, and focus on care quality improvements for Critical Access Hospitals and small rural hospitals.  In fiscal year 2022, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) – through the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) – provided approximately $408 million in funding to increase health care access, strengthen health networks, and focus on care quality improvements for Critical Access Hospitals and small rural hospitals.

FY2022 Award for the Rural Public Health Workforce Training Network Technical Assistance Program

The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy has awarded over $1 million to the Georgia Health Policy Center in a three-year cooperative agreement intended to provide nationwide technical assistance (TA) to rural health care networks responding to COVID-19, pandemic-related workforce shortages. The TA will help rural health care networks expand the public health workforce capacity by supporting job development, training, and placement in rural communities

Measuring Adverse Childhood Experiences

Researchers used claims and enrollment data from Tennessee’s Medicaid program to develop an algorithm measuring five types of ACEs: maltreatment and peer violence, foster care and family disruption, maternal mental illness, maternal substance use disorder, and abuse of the mother. Recent recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health & Human Services included stronger data collection that analyzes rural-urban differences.
