The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) published Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants in 2018. The National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NCSACW) developed companion materials that offer information and strategies to support pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders (SUDs) in the child welfare system.

The Recovery-Ready Workplace Toolkit: Guidance and Resources for Private and Public Sector Employers was created through the efforts of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Domestic Policy Council, and 12 federal departments and independent agencies. It is designed to help businesses and other employers prevent and respond more effectively to substance misuse among employees, build their workforces through hiring of people in recovery, and develop a recovery-supportive culture.

The John Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health launched the new Tribal Principles website which offers culturally relevant, Indigenous-centered guidance for Tribes to consider when creating spending plans for the use of Tribal opioid settlements. This work complements the broad state/national settlement guidance led at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Why it matters: Opioid settlement funding provides a unique opportunity to address current gaps in the addiction care system as a whole.

As announced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in January 2023, clinicians no longer need a federal waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder. Clinicians will still be required to register with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to prescribe controlled medications. On June 27, the DEA began to require that registration applicants – both new and renewing – affirm they have completed a new, one-time, eight-hour training.

Contingency management has empirical support but limited implementation. This report provides an overview of contingency management, barriers of implementation, and recommendation on how to overcome the challenges of implementation. Evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder is important as the U.S. has been experiencing an overdose crisis resulting in overdose deaths.
