Resources to Treat Substance Use Disorder in the Acute Care Setting

Posted 10/7/2020 (updated 3/29/2024)

This toolkit contains clinical materials targeting treatment of substance use disorder in the acute care setting. It includes resources for hospital clinicians to adopt including clinical protocols, information about medication assisted treatment and induction protocols, treating patients with justice involvement, advice for creating substance use navigator programs to assist patients, guidance for creating site-specific order sets, harm reduction information, and patient-facing educational materials.

These resources have been developed by an interdisciplinary team based on published evidence and expert opinion. As the literature develops best practices may change. They should never be used as a substitute for clinical judgement. Individual providers are responsible for assessing the unique circumstances and needs of each case. Adherence to these guidelines will not ensure successful treatment in every situation.
