International Overdose Awareness Day 2025

Posted 7/1/2025 (updated 7/23/2025)

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31st each year to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death, while also acknowledging the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury because of drug overdose. In addition to International Overdose Awareness Day, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) also commemorates International Overdose Awareness Week and has a toolkit available.

There are resources, media toolkits, and educational material available which can help the public recognize whether a person is experiencing an overdose, know what to do if a person may be experiencing an overdose, and much more. Together we can end overdose.
